What is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition®?

Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) is a science-based, holistic way to uncover why you’re experiencing symptoms—not just how to manage them. When the body’s systems are out of balance, it can show up as digestive discomfort, fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, skin flare-ups, and “mystery” symptoms that don’t seem to connect.

At Panacea Vita, FDN is a collaborative process between you and Dr. Spela Perc. Together, we look at the full picture—your history, lifestyle, stress load, and internal physiology—so you can move from symptom-chasing to root-cause clarity.

How Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Works

Instead of focusing on one isolated issue, Functional Nutrition evaluates the systems that influence how you feel day to day, including:

  • Digestion & gut microbiome

  • Immune function & inflammation

  • Detoxification pathways

  • Hormones & stress response

  • Intestinal barrier integrity

We often use personalized functional lab testing, which is typically completed at home (simple, guided collection kits), to identify patterns and pinpoint the most effective next steps.

Your protocol is built around restoring balance across the body’s systems. Depending on your needs, your plan may include:

  • Therapeutic nutrition strategies (tailored to your physiology, not trends)

  • Sleep support & circadian hygiene

  • Movement & exercise recommendations

  • Stress regulation tools (nervous system support matters)

  • Targeted supplementation protocols (only where it helps, based on data)

  • The D.R.E.S.S. protocol—Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress reduction, and Supplementation—designed specifically for you.

the Bigger Picture and Focus on You

While we apply this approach most often to digestive health concerns, gut imbalances rarely exist alone. The gut is deeply connected to hormones, immunity, mood, skin, and energy. That’s why we assess the whole system—even when digestive symptoms are the main complaint.

To make this easier to understand, we use simple visuals and frameworks that show how stressors → system imbalances → symptoms develop over time.

Functional Lab Testing We Commonly Use

Below are some of the most common tests we may recommend, depending on your symptoms and health goals. Tests are ordered through trusted distributors available in your country, and lab fees are paid directly to the lab. (Consulting fees are separate.)

GI-MAP Stool Test

A comprehensive DNA-based stool analysis that looks at:

  • Pathogenic bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi

  • Opportunistic organisms and beneficial flora

  • Markers related to digestion, inflammation, and gut barrier function
This helps us identify what may be driving symptoms and where healing can begin.

SIBO Breath Test

A breath test using lactulose (and sometimes glucose) with multiple samples over several hours. It measures hydrogen and methane gases to detect Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), often linked to:

  • Bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea

  • Brain fog, low mood, anxious feelings

IgG Food Sensitivity Testing

A simple finger-prick blood spot test that screens for delayed immune reactions to specific foods. These reactions can be tricky to identify without testing because symptoms may appear hours to days later. Commonly associated symptoms include:

  • IBS-type symptoms

  • Headaches, brain fog, fatigue

  • Skin issues (like eczema)

Additional Labs We May Interpret

When appropriate, we can also review:

  • Other comprehensive stool testing

  • Hormone testing (including dried urine hormone panels)

  • Organic acids testing (OAT/MOAT)
